The bill nobody warns you about

Most people who fall in love with Bali picture the house first: the pool, the open living room, the view over the trees. Almost nobody pictures the electricity bill.

They should, because it can be a shock. Running air conditioning through the hot months, across a few bedrooms and a living room, is comfortably the single largest running cost of most homes here — and in the hotter, drier stretch of the year it only climbs. Every villa-cost guide written for buyers says the same thing in different words: the AC is the number that surprises people.

Here is the part those guides rarely mention. You can design most of that bill away before you ever pour a foundation. Not with expensive gadgets or solar panels bolted on at the end — with the shape of the house itself. The roof, the windows, which way the building faces, where you put the trees. These are free decisions if you make them early, and nearly impossible to fix once the walls are up.

This is the oldest idea in Balinese building, and it has a slightly technical name — passive cooling — but there is nothing complicated about the goal. A well-designed tropical house keeps the sun off, lets the breeze through, and uses cool air, shade and water instead of a machine. The AC becomes a comfort for the hottest afternoon or a good night’s sleep, not a life-support system you can never switch off.

Four things that keep a house cool on its own

You don’t need to understand the physics to ask for the right things. Here are the four moves that do most of the work — the same ones the old Balinese compounds have used for centuries, translated into a home you’d actually want to live in today.

1. A big roof that throws deep shade

The most important cooling device in a tropical house is the roof, and specifically how far it reaches past the walls. A generous overhang keeps direct sun off the walls and windows all day, so the house never has to work to shed heat it should never have absorbed. It also lets you throw the doors open in a downpour without rain coming in — which is what makes those wide, shaded verandas possible in the first place.

When people describe a Bali home as feeling “calm” or “sheltered,” this deep roof shadow is usually what they’re responding to, even if they can’t name it.

2. Air that can move all the way through

Heat gets trapped when air can’t escape. The trick is to give the breeze a way in on one side and a way out on the other, so it flows through the house and carries the warmth with it. Architects call this cross-ventilation; you’ll feel it as that lovely through-draught in a well-made tropical home.

It’s why our rooms tend to have openings on two sides, why ceilings are high (hot air rises, so give it somewhere to go), and why the layout matters as much as the openings. A single beautiful window on one wall looks nice and does almost nothing. Two openings that talk to each other change how the whole room feels.

3. Facing the house the right way

Which direction your home faces decides how much sun it swallows. Point the long, glassy side of a house at the harsh afternoon sun and you’ll be fighting heat every day of its life. Turn it a few degrees the other way, put the solid walls and service rooms on the hot side, and open the living spaces toward the breeze and the good light instead — and the house cools itself for free, forever.

This is the decision that costs nothing and can never be undone. It’s also the one most rushed builds get wrong. It’s worth slowing down for.

4. Bringing the outside in

The reason indoor-outdoor living feels so good in Bali isn’t only romance — it’s cooling. A living room that opens fully to a shaded garden borrows the cool of the plants, the pool, the moving air. Greenery around a house lowers the temperature just outside the walls; water features do the same; a shaded courtyard becomes a pocket of cool the whole house draws from.

Done well, you stop thinking of “inside” and “outside” as separate places. You just move through the house following the shade and the breeze, the way you naturally want to.

What this feels like to live in

Numbers are easy to quote and hard to feel, so let me describe the difference instead.

A house that depends on air conditioning has a particular quality: you arrive, and the first thing you do is close it up and switch the machines on. The good air is sealed inside; the outside becomes something you look at through glass. When the power drops — and in Bali it does — the house turns stuffy within the hour.

A house designed to breathe feels the opposite. You open it in the morning and the day comes in. There’s the sound of the garden instead of a compressor. The afternoon heat is held at bay by shade and moving air, and the AC, if you use it at all, is a small pleasure at night rather than a bill you dread. When the power flickers, nothing much changes — the house was never relying on it.

That second house also happens to cost a fraction to run. But most of our clients, once they’ve lived in one, talk about the feeling first.

Building for Bali’s two seasons

One more thing worth understanding, because it shapes every decision. Bali doesn’t really have hot and cold — it has wet and dry. For much of the year it’s warm and humid, and then there’s a long rainy season with serious downpours.

A home here has to do two jobs at once: shed heat and handle a lot of water, gracefully. That’s why the moves above tend to double up. The deep roof that shades you in the dry season is the same roof that lets you keep the house open during the rains. Raising the building off the ground keeps it cool and keeps the wet season out. Good tropical design isn’t a list of separate fixes — it’s a handful of decisions that each solve several problems at once. That’s what makes it feel effortless when it’s done right, and why it’s so hard to bolt on later.

What to ask for when you build

If you take nothing else from this, take these questions to whoever designs your home. You don’t need to know the answers — you need to know they’ve thought about them.

  • “Which way does the house face, and why?” There should be a real reason involving the sun and the wind, not just the view or the driveway.

  • “How does air move through each room?” Look for openings on two sides, high ceilings, a way for hot air to escape.

  • “How far does the roof reach past the walls?” Deeper is usually better here. Ask how it shades the windows through the day.

  • “How will this house feel in a power cut?” A good tropical home is still comfortable. If the honest answer is “you’d switch to a generator,” the design is leaning on machines.

  • “Where does the greenery and water go?” Planting and shade near the house aren’t just decoration — they’re part of the cooling.

An architect who lights up at these questions is one who designs for the climate. That’s the person you want.

FAQ

Can a house in Bali really stay comfortable without air conditioning?

For most of the day, yes — if it’s designed for it. Shade, cross-breezes, the right orientation and greenery do most of the work. Air conditioning then becomes an occasional comfort, mainly for sleeping on the hottest nights, rather than something running around the clock.

Does designing for natural cooling cost more to build?

The core decisions — orientation, roof depth, where the openings go — cost little or nothing extra. They’re about getting the design right early, not adding expense. What they save you is years of high electricity bills, so they usually pay for themselves many times over.

Will I still need AC at all?

Most people keep it in bedrooms for the hottest nights, and that’s completely reasonable. The goal isn’t to ban air conditioning — it’s to design a home that doesn’t depend on it, so you use it by choice, not necessity.

Isn’t this just old-fashioned Balinese building?

Can these ideas be added to a house that’s already built?

Some can be improved — more planting, better shading, ceiling fans. But the biggest wins (orientation, roof, airflow) are decided at the drawing stage and are very hard to change later. That’s exactly why it’s worth designing carefully before you build.
